Nightingale Housing – Nightingale 1

The Nightingale model is a new housing development system that enables like-minded architects to develop design-led, multi-residential housing that is environmentally, financially and socially sustainable.

The Cape – The Cape Sustainable Housing Project, Cape Patterson

A housing project harnesses energy efficient design principles and construction techniques to build sustainable, affordable, attractive, carbon neutral, climate adapted, healthy and comfortable homes and communities.

Glen Eira City Council – Booran Reserve

An unused and inaccessible 1.6Ha old reservoir, decommissioned in the late 1970’s, is transformed into a stunning, vibrant and sustainable recreational space providing community health and wellbeing benefits.

COMMUNITY

Enable Social Enterprises – Greener Futures Employability Program

A social enterprise program provides employability skills programs that enables disadvantaged jobseekers to connect with community, improving their employment prospects and community cohesion.

Soap Aid – Hotel to Hands Soap Recycling Program

A partnership with Rotary that collects, sorts, cleans and reprocesses discarded hotel soap and produces fresh, hygienic bars of soap for re-distribution to poor, disadvantaged communities around the world and remote Aboriginal communities.

The Nature Conservancy Australia – Shuck Don’t Chuck Recycling Project

A reef restoration project that represents a regenerative approach to the natural environment by rebuilding shellfish reefs with leftover oyster shells collected from local seafood restaurants.

EDUCATION

Box Hill Institute – Box Hill Institute CLT Timber

Final year building design students explore the emerging sustainable construction technology of Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) by designing a sustainable mixed-use, predominantly residential building.

CERES – Sustainability and Alternative Pathways

Sustainability leader celebrates 35 years of community-based learning and action that creates environmentally beneficial, socially just, economically satisfying, culturally enriching and spiritually nurturing ways of living together.

St Louis de Montfort’s Primary School – Steps to Sustainability Conference

A conference initiated by the Port Phillip EcoCentre and St Louis de Montfort’s Primary School that educates about best sustainable and environmental practices, empowering community to embed sustainable education.

ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE

Enable Social Enterprises – Greener Futures Employability Program

Social enterprise Enable’s Greener Futures Employability Program provides a range of employability skills programs for disadvantaged workers including a strong focus on environmental skills.

Friends of the Earth – Coal and Gas Free Victoria

An awareness campaign run across regional Victoria through more than 100 forums alerts communities to the potential threat of ‘fracking’ and addresses the question of unconventional gas drilling.

Rosamond Special School – Seeds Kitchen Garden Program

A very successful Kitchen Garden school that wants to be a great school, not a great ‘special’ school develops a program enjoyed by all – students, staff, families and visitors.

ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

Moonlit Sanctuary Wildlife Conservation Park – Orange-bellied Parrot Breeding for Recovery

A 20-aviary complex for up to 40 breeding birds and 100 offspring opens – results from the first season from 12 pairs was 25 offspring, helping to save this endangered species of birds from extinction.

The Cape – The Cape Sustainable Housing Precinct, Cape Patterson

A housing project not only builds energy positive homes, it develops a series of local programs to protect the site’s natural habitat via environmental protection

Yarra Valley Water – Yarra Valley Water’s Waste to Energy Facility

A waste to energy facility saves food waste and processes it into biogas via anaerobic digestion with plans to divert 33,000 tonnes of waste per year from landfill and power two treatment plants.

GOVERNMENT

Great Ocean Road Coast Committee – Great Ocean Road Coast Committee

Four schools take ownership of the rehabilitation and conservation of six sites between Torquay and Lorne, increasing awareness around environmental issues, encouraging social responsibility and environmental stewardship.

Moreland City Council – Addressing Urban Heat in a Warming Climate – Moreland Urban Heat Island Effect Action Plan

A 2016 – 2026 plan sets a clear approach for Council and maps out vital projects required for Moreland to transition to a cooler, greener and more resilient and liveable city.

Municipal Association of Victoria on behalf of Council Alliance for a Sustainable Built Environment (CASBE)

CASBE represents councils dedicated to sustainable built form outcomes, resulting in significant projects such as local ESD Planning Policies and a Built Environment Sustainability Assessment tool.

HEALTH

3000 acres – Improving Access to Healthy Food and Building Community

An innovative collaboration with town planners, lawyers, residential developers and web-based developers connects people in urban environments who want to grow their own food with those who hold the land and resources.

Epworth Hospital Richmond – Perioperative Services Going Green and Diverting Waste from Landfill

A range of initiatives aims to address the excessive production of waste materials by ensuring reduced use of materials, reusing materials and recycling.

Western Health – Single Use Metal Instruments Recycling Program

Replicatable program that recycles single-use metal instruments (SUMIs) – an obvious waste of precious metals achieves approximately 500kgs of recycled steel, representing approximately 80% of all SUMIs purchased.

eWater Systems – eWater Systems

‘Water-splitting’ technology used in food production as an alternative to packaged chemicals that kills bacteria without affecting food taste – for companies committed to sustainable, organic processing and food waste reduction.

Sustainable Salons Australia – Sustainable Salons Australia

A comprehensive resource recovery program that collects up to 95% of waste from hundreds of hairdressing and beauty salons, then redirects all material for reuse, recycling and repurposing.

TIC Mattress Recycling – Putting Mattress Recycling to Bed

World-leading, large scale automated mattress recycling technology addresses the growing problem of more than 1 million mattresses that go to landfill each year in Australia.

LARGE BUSINESS

Exemplar Health (NBH) Partnership – New Bendigo Hospital

The largest regional hospital in Victoria integrates sustainable thinking into all elements of its design, construction and systems to create a healing and therapeutic environment for all users.

Grand Hyatt Melbourne – Grand Hyatt Melbourne

The first five-star hotel in Victoria to install a Closed Loop Organics Unit, removing food waste from the general waste stream, engaging staff, and conducting site tours and information sessions for the hospitality industry.

SMALL AND MEDIUM ENTERPRISES

Environmental Monitoring Solutions – Fuelsuite

A fuel management and monitoring system that provides clients with 30 second updates, where they can see emerging issues, such as potential fuel leaks, before they impact business operations and the environment.

Kingfield Galvanizing – Most Sustainable Hot Dip Galvanizer in the Southern Hemisphere

A large, sustainable and highly automated galvanizing plant produces significantly low emissions through a fully enclosed facility that re-uses waste, reclaims furnace heat and recycles water.

The Farmer’s Place – From Little Things Big Things Grow

A small working farm, cafe and farmers’ market demonstrates sustainability across its own practices, and shares information as a local hub conducting environmental education for schools, community and social groups.
