Cooling Communities

Extreme heat can cause and exacerbate serious health issues. The Cooling Communities project helped to mitigate Urban Heat Island Effect (UHIE) impacts on social housing residents: people who are particularly at risk from heat stress as they are more likely to live in poorly designed or maintained properties and have chronic health conditions.

The action plan found that Moreland’s suburbs are particularly vulnerable to the UHIE with temperatures in residential areas in excess of 50 degree Celsius in peak summer periods.

The result was 10 social housing properties retrofitted with upgrades.
