Booran Reserve

Constructed in 1883 and de-commissioned in the 1970’s, the Booran Reserve played an integral role in the development of Melbourne’s water network as the Caulfield Service Reservoir.

A massive, multidisciplinary, community-engaged project saw the unused and inaccessible 1.6Ha old reservoir recently transformed into a vibrant and sustainable recreational space.

The theme of water has been retained and incorporated into many of the new park features.

The site is now equipped with automated systems including energy management, irrigation and lighting control software. Solar power was installed to offset day time running of an underground water play plantroom, irrigation plant room, two toilet blocks and CCTV.

A stormwater harvesting system enables 500KL of water to be stored underground and run through treatment facilities for use in irrigation and toilet flushing.

The stunningly redeveloped reserve respects local heritage and was co-designed with the community, ensuring that the site continues to tell the story of its role in Melbourne’s water history.
