Great Ocean Road Coast Committee

Coast Guardians

Four schools have taken ownership of the rehabilitation and conservation of six sites along the coast between Torquay and Lorne.

The Coast Guardians Program is a program created by the Great Ocean Road Coast Committee for year nine students from local and regional schools.

The program complements Great Ocean Road Coast’s Environmental Education Program for schools and groups, aimed at increasing awareness around environmental issues and encouraging social responsibility and environmental stewardship.

On ground activities such as weeding, planting, mulching, erosion prevention and rubbish removal are integrated with theory based learning covering a range of conservation topics, linked to school curriculum.

The program is also aimed at fostering partnerships between the schools, local community organisations and local environmental volunteer groups.

Ultimately, it is hoped that participants will be able to walk along a protected coast in years to come and enjoy the benefits of their hard work.
