Sustainable Salons Australia
Sustainable Salons Australia (SSA) is the first comprehensive resource recovery program designed for the hair and beauty salon environment that rewards salons and gives back to the community.
Founded in 2015, SSA specialises in collecting up to 95 per cent of the salon waste bin and redirecting material for reuse, recycling and repurposing solutions.
Today, the program has hundreds of salon members nationally as part of the journey to zero waste.
Victoria was the first SSA territory to expand the program into parallel salon businesses – dog-grooming, dermal clinic and barber members were all pioneered. The program has now been implemented across these salon industries in both New South Wales and Queensland.
In 2016, the program saved more than 10,000kg of waste materials from ending up in landfill, donated 1,500 ponytails to Variety, the Children’s Charity to make wigs for kids suffering from cancer or alopecia, and donated 1,200 meals to OzHarvest, Australia’s leading food rescue charity.
